Growing Tomatoes

They are of the most popular vegetables for any gardener to have in thier garden. There are hundreds of different varieties of tomatoes. Tomatoes are very easy to grow, and can even be grown in a container if you don't have a garden.

There a three main categories I like to put them in. 1. Beef steak 2. Juice 3. Grape / cherry . A beef steak tomato has a lot of meat to it with only a little juice. A juice tomato is just that, mainly juice. A cherry or grape tomato is a small tomato that looks like a cherry or grape.

They can be started indoors from seed 6-8 weeks before transplanting them outside. I prefer to buy them from a nursery prior to placing them in my garden.( much easier ) Plant them about 14 to 24 inches apart depending on type. Make sure to water them everyday for the first two weeks after transplanting. Then make sure they receive water every other day after that.

Tomatoe plants are like ivy and will grow upwards. Using tomato cages or spiral stakes for the plants to climb up are beneficial to the plant and the tomatoes. You want to keep the tomatoes off the ground to keep them from bruising.

Tomatoes contain vitamin C, fiber, potassium, and vitamin A. They are also a source of lycopene which researchers say fights cancer.

They have many uses in cooking, they can be added to just about any dish or salad. Also forsoup, sauce, paste, juice and salsa.
